Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the photography is so delightful
Winter is a season of hibernation for many of us, but this issue I want to encourage you to get out there – wherever “there” is – with your camera, despite the cold temperatures and shorter daylight hours.
This issue, our winter landscapes feature comes from the madly talented Mike Mezeul II. He covers what to wear, how to protect your camera from the elements, and the best ways to record winter scenes. Mike has been running photo workshops for many years; I can’t think of a better guide to take you through the best ways to capture the winter season. Turn to p32.
Warming up slightly, we’ve got a drone feature from James Abbott on p46. If you’ve ever wondered about shooting from the skies, James has some advice on the permissions and licences you’ll need to fly a drone, alongside technical tips for taking photographs and commercial ideas for fully utilising these aerial shots.
Meanwhile, our bigger creative project on focusstacked scenes starts on p78, followed by tutorials covering macro, lifestyle imagery and light trails.
Elsewhere, our career feature looks at the importance of asking permission when (and before) taking people’s portraits, while the pro column is sure to reignite your passion for personal projects.
As usual, there’s a whole new batch of expert reviews for you to look forward to, starting on p96. We’ve got the Canon M6 II (p104), Hasselblad X1D II 50C (p106), plus new lenses and accessories.
Lastly, if you enjoy sharing ideas and questions with like-minded photographers, have you seen our new online forums? Join the discussion at forums. For now, enjoy the issue!
