Airfix Model World UK - Issue 110 - 2020 January
Issue 110
Airfix Model World magazine is your complete guide to the world of scale modelling.
Published monthly, it caters for all manner of modellers, from the eager novice to the experienced master modeller.
While new Airfix toolings and re-releases feature on a regular basis, the magazine also covers all of the major manufacturers, such as Hasegawa, Trumpeter, Tamiya, Italeri and Hobby Boss, to offer something for everyone. Whilst the primary focus is on aircraft, Airfix Model World also offers projects spanning military, ships, cars, space and figures.
No matter how productive I’ve been in my building, I always leave Scale ModelWorld inspired. The UK’s premier model show has its own distinct format that differs from similar events worldwide. Clubs and special interest groups constitute the majority of displays, while the number of new product announcements (such as Airfix’s 1/72 Vulcan – see news pages) never fails to impress. For me, this ‘broad church’ approach is crucial to the event’s success. Although there’s an understandable focus on the competition, the main highlight for me is chatting with modellers from around the world about their builds and upcoming projects, even if I can’t devote as much time to this as I’d like.
My personal thanks go to the IPMS volunteers who organised this year’s Scale ModelWorld, which – to my eyes, at least – was one of the smoothest running to date. Congratulations are also in order for several AMW contributors, namely Nick Shuttleworth, Richard Spreckley and Chris Jones, for their awards and commendations in the competition.
As the first magazine of a new year, you’ll notice a slight ‘tweak’ to the contents. We’ll be running a series of articles on basic modelling
skills – in part, this is due to requests from current readers, but it’s also aimed at new entrants to the hobby. These will be accompanied by Back to Basics panels in certain features, such as this issue’s Airfix 1/72 Typhoon Mk.Ib build, highlighting how even the most skilled builders rely on getting these aspects right.
I’m also delighted to include two builds of recently tooled offerings, namely Academy’s 1/35 AH-1Z Viper and relative newcomer Gecko
Models’ 1/35 A10 Cruiser tank. And the Your Airfix section makes a welcome return.
I hope you enjoy this Christmas issue. Happy modelling!
