This time of year is often a limbo period for photographers. While we might be looking forward to the promise of colourful spring landscapes, longer days and gorgeous light, we’re presented with a more bleak reality of winter scenes for months to come. Instead of shunning this monochrome time of year, why not embrace it and turn your camera towards black and white imagery? Inside this issue, you’ll find enough tips to become a master of monochrome photography. Turn to p22 for a guide to dramatic B&W scenes; p52 for a fineart approach to the genre; and p102 to discover an expert review of the Leica Q2 Monochrom camera. With many of us stuck at home due to COVID lockdowns, now also feels like a good time to hunker down and refresh some fundamental camera skills. Our Manual feature on p36 is a complete guide to controlling your camera, and explains how getting away from auto modes can improve your shots. If brand new skills and project ideas are what you’re looking for, there are two free guides on portrait and food photography for you to download (links on p9). Elsewhere, learn to shoot landscapes with a wide aperture (p58), use editing textures for more dramatic results (p60), and produce stunning prints yourself at home (p64).
We’re bolstered by all the pro photographers who keep adapting to the current climate with positivity and creativity. In our interview on p74, wedding shooter Marianne Chua shares her portfolio, thoughts, feelings, and gear from a difficult year. For more gear, turn to the kit intro on p93 and see our latest round-up of new reviews and expert tests. Enjoy the issue, stay safe, and we’ll see you soon.
